The Continued Rise of Online Advertising

Big news for the ad industry out there today. According to this article we stumbled across on Mashable today, marketers are projected to spend more on online advertising than on advertising in print magazines and newspapers for the first time in U.S. history. As an agency that prides ourselves on tailoring our services, ad placement included, to the different and specific needs of a vast aray of clients, this was interesting news.

According to the article, "online advertising is expected to generate $39.5 billion in sales this year — a 23.3% increase from 2011 — compared to a sum of $33.8 billion on print." That's a significant increase in just one year. A few more interesting numbers:

  • Spending on TV promises to be largely unaffected by growing online ad budgets, with expectations at $72 billion in TV advertising in 2016, up 18.6% from 2011.
  • Overall, the total U.S. ad spending is forecasted to grow by 6.7% to $169.5 billion, with total ad spending to reach almost $200 billion by 2016.
  • By 2016, online advertising will account for a third of ads placed.

The spike is attributed to a greater investment in campaigns ads and mobile advertising-- not so surprising as the Internet continues to give businesses limitless opportunities and social and mobile marketing rise to be game-changers.
