Eyes on You: How Eyes View Your Facebook Profile

Ever wonder just how important all that info on a Facebook profile is? Well, Mashable did. Which is why they hired EyeTrackShop to perform an eye-tracking study to profile pages of popular social networks. Using webcams of participants, the study record eye movements on profile pages from Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube, Klout, Reddit, Digg, Tumblr, Twitter, StumbleUpon, and Pinterest at ten second intervals. The results can easily be applied to your business, brand, or clients fan page. A few of the results surprised us here at The Idea Boutique. Read on:

Job title garnered more attention than the profile picture on LinkedIn- Sure, not so surprising considering the nature of the social network. But also considering that profile pictures matter more than anything else on Facebook, Klout, and StumbleUpon (and human nature aside), I was surprised that it was the most attention worthy feature on the site.

  • Who you know matters - Do you have your grandmother posting on your Facebook wall or lots of spam clogging up your wall? Well, beware or delete. The first few thumbnails of people who posted on your page via Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Klout commanded lots of attention and shaped perception. Working for a business or client? Make sure attention-worthy content is taking up this space if you can.
  • Klout, Digg, and Reddit were studied - Little known social networks may have their big boom of popularity any day, so its important to have a working knowledge of what’s gaining attention and what’s losing importance.
